What is the prostitute, or harlot, in the book of Revelation?

Revelation 17:1 (NIV)
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters.”

You may think this is an odd subject to bring up in the Bible, but the key to understanding the “great prostitute” can be found in understanding the symbolic meaning of the word. The word prostitute, or harlot, is used throughout the Bible to represent a false religion.
